Artist Shannon ThomasArtist, Impressionist Paintings, Abstract Paintings, Digital Art March 08 Talking about Seeing pictures of paintings in the mind
Quote I've been practiceing meditation, setting medition and Chi Gong. I find it intesting that the quiet and the peaceful place you go while meditating, feels somewhat like the place you go into while creating art. Nothingness but yet somewhere. present but not. All artist know of this place we go while creating. We call it the zone. Where we are not aware of time. The focus is so intense that your not even aware of yourself painting. The brush seems to take on a life of its own. Hours can go by but it seems like minutes. The Eastern religions talk about artist and creativity and the zone. The intense focus where the higher self takes ahold of the brush. Creating at the highest level of consciousness. Seeing pictures of paintings in the mind Kayla in collegeHard to believe that Kayla has been in College for over half of her senior year. She has grown so much since last sping when she graduated from high school. She is majoring in religous studies and the transformation and watching her grow has been wonderful to watch. She is home for spring break already, she will be through with her freshman year of College in just a couple of months. Its good to hear her laugh again and to see that sparkle in her eyes. Life is unfolding as it should. April 04 My daughter just moved out yesterdayYesterday my 18 year old daughter came in and said, mommy, I'm moving out. I new it could happen at any time but I guess I just didn't want to think about it. It really floored me. I told her I would not support it and told her the car would not go with her. She agreed sweetly. I then told her the computer we got for her on her birthday that she would have to leave here. She said, that was a present mom and it would be like being an Indian giver. I agreed with that but told her no furniture. She agreed to that also. I told her when she went out the door, my responsibilities would be over. She would be responcible for her own food, clothing, rent, laundry, soap, everything. She said she new that. With every obstacle I put in front of her she took calmly. She said mom I'll have you and dad over for dinner. I just stood there and said uh huh. She said, Mom I'll still come over and help you in the yard. I said, sure. I said promise me you will go to college this fall like we planned. She said you all are still going to pay for my college aren't you? I said that all depends. It depends on you doing the right thing and making good decisions. I asked her how much money have you got. She said, $5. with a gentle smile. I said, we won't help. Part of being responcible is making plans and doing it in steps. Most people save up to move out on their own. I'm going to look for a job tomorrow mom and I'll call you and let you know what happens. I said Kayla, when you walk out that door you don't have to call me and check in, you've made this decision and I don't want to know when your out late as I will set here and worry. She started to cry and said you don't want to know what I'm doing? I said, of course I want to know but its different now. You don't have to call and tell me where your at. She said, I'll call just to chat mom and I'll come over sometimes to visit and we can watch movies sometimes. I said, sure. She went back to her room and I wanted to find a whole to crawl in and die. I wondered around the house and eyed a room and realized that there was no hiding or running from my feelings. So I went back to her room and told her friend to leave for a minute. I walked over to her and hugged her and said I love you. We stood there and held each other and then I went slowly out of the room. She and a friend carried her boxes out one by one. I picked up a load of dirty clothes of hers and laid them on the floor and told her not to forget them, they would be her first load on her own. I walked her out and waved good bye in the driveway and then came into my bedroom and cried. Flashes of her as a little girl went through my head. Her and I walking on a path we use to take walks on all the time and her and I holding hands. She would tug on my arm and say, mommy don't sing. I would say ok and then forget and start singing again then she would repeat mommy don't sing. When she was a baby she would thunk her heal on her mattress. She would thunk once, then twice and then if you didn't respond three times. If you didn't come to her after the third she would really cry. Thunking was her signal for food or diaper change.
Children bring so much to us. They come into our lives and fill us with wonder, love, worry, laughter, pain and work and then we have to set them free. Looking on the internet for a book that my daughter Jamie recommended, The secret. It was like providence that this quote came up.
There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life--- happiness, freedom and peace of mind----are always attained by giving them to someone else. By:Peyton Conway March
So my dear daughter, I set you free to obtain happiness and peace of mind and I might even give you your car back. we'll see. October 26 Trip to Texas, Jamie, Avery and BenjaminI rode down to Texas with Bill last week he had a show to attend regarding his software. So I went along to see my daughter and grand kids. Ended up had a great visit. Avery and Benjamin had grown alot. Jamie showed me around Austin and I spent the night with her one night. To short a visit though. Here is some pics of them and us. We got to see the bats fly out at sunset under the congress bridge. That was an amazing site to see. Austin is still growing and it is a beautiful city. HalloweenI've been making cup cakes for my daughters halloween party tomorrow night. Its her last year at home as she graduates from high school. Halloween has always been her favorite time of the year. Its kind of sad though as she will be celebrating this time of the year else where probably next year. Happy halloween everyone. March 13 My dog ValdoValdo is our puppy who gives us much pleasure and happiness. The amazing thing about animals is they love you inspite of our flaws. Valdo lays below my easel and waits for me patiently to come and play. He likes to fetch and jump up to grab a toy that I have dangling for him. He follows me everywhere around the house even if its just into the other room and back. Sometimes I can feel his feet on the back of my heals as I walk from room to room. Its an amazing thing to be adored by an animal like my dog Valdo. Truely it is a blessing although sometimes bothersome. March 10 Painting with oilSwitching from acrylics to oils has been hard. I painted several paintings and became more frustrated after each attempt. My paint became muddy very quickly and I just did not understand the layering techniques. I was use to layering over dry instead of wet on wet. Finally I was in the middle of a pianting when I picked up the knife and said what the heck it can't get any worse. Immediately I saw results. I was able to go over other colors and get the effect that I was looking for. Here are two paintings created out of adding the use of a knife. February 04 Seeing pictures of paintings in the mindClosing my eyes while awake. I can see pictures of paintings unpainted. They are so vivid and the color use is unusual and beautiful. I can look up close and see the detail of a tree trunk, leaf, rocks, water, waves or anything in the painting. They are all landscapes some abstract, some impressionist and expressionist. I tried to see if other artist had experienced this but didn't get to much information except as one artist put it, lay back and enjoy the show. One thought was that I was thinking art so much that my unconscious was creating on its own. If thats true wish the unconscious would pass on the expertise to paint them. One artist said that my hormones were probably off as the artist thought I was having these images while sleeping thus having sleep deprevation but thats not the case, I'm wide awake just my eyes are closed.
Imagination is a funny thing. No one knows what lerks in the mind of an artist. My thought is we think demensionally exposing the feelings we have at any given time when we create. Quote There are many reasons for Artist Block according to The book "The Artist Way". Perfectionism, self Sabotage, unreasonable demands to our creativity, anger, I don't deserve to be successful and many others. The Artist Way is an excellent book to recovery and will help to sort out the whys of Artist Block. I've just started doing the morning pages that it recommends and find it enlightening. Quote Have you ever experienced Artist block? Well I did this last year and it was not fun! Everything I painted I hated. The brushes seemed awkward and did not seem to fit in my hands. The paint didn't feel right going on the canvas and I hated my canvases to, they even felt wrong. I had never experienced it and hope to never experience it in the future. I started having self doubts and a little voice in my head would say and you call yourself an artist. How dare you? Well I wasn't producing and if you aren't creating then you must not be an artist. I packed up one day and headed for my artist store to ask one of the artist that worked there if they had ever experienced it and if so how they over came it. When I walked in I had my head hanging down low. Self esteem was really blown away. I wondered sheepishly through the whole store and asked my self if I should really bother to ask or should I just wait and try to get over this painful time in my life. I grabbed a few brushes and went on up to the counter and asked the lady behind the counter if she was an Artist. She said yes, I am. Well in one big breath I told her everything and asked her if she had ever experienced Artist block? Next to me was standing a man waiting to make a purchase also of various artist needs. He said, " what about 14 years?" I gasped and said, "oh, please don't let it be that long." I asked him what caused his Painters block? He said, pressure to make a living at the thing I loved to do. He said, " He had just got back to painting and his brother called and the first thing said that he was so good that he should be making a living at it." He said he hung up on him immediately. Well, I knew that was not my problem or at least I figured it wasn't. So I asked him how to get over it or if he could give me any advice. He said, Just no pressure! I then turned to the artist behind the counter and asked if she had any advice. She said, Go back to the thing you love. To the place where you first started creating and try not to think of anything, just have fun, play. Don't think of what you are creating or how it will turn out. Well, It worked. I painted my first painting in months and I am so greatful to her. When I go back I'm going to tell her how absolutely greatful I am for her wonderful advice. I guess the moral of the story is Seek and you shall find. If I wouldn't of got up the nerve to ask a fellow artist, I might still be frozen with artist block. Below is the result of that advice!
